PTE TEST FORMAT
Understand the Exam Before You Start
The PTE test format is divided into three main parts: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. The exam is computer-based and checks how well you can use English in academic and professional situations.
At British Center, we help students understand each part of the PTE Academic test so they can prepare with the right strategy, manage time better, and avoid common mistakes on exam day.
TEST OVERVIEW
How the PTE Academic Test is Structured
PTE Academic is a four-skills English test that assesses Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening in one computer-based exam. Pearson describes the test as a computer-based academic English test for study, migration, or work abroad.
The test is completed at a test center using a computer, headset, microphone, keyboard, and screen. Students answer different question types, and some tasks can assess more than one skill at the same time.
TEST PARTS
The Three Main Parts of PTE
The PTE Academic test format includes three main sections:
Part 1: Speaking & Writing
Part 2: Reading
Part 3: Listening
Each part has different question types and timing. A strong preparation plan should cover all sections because your final score depends on overall performance across the exam.
PART 1
Speaking & Writing
The Speaking & Writing part checks your ability to produce spoken and written English in an academic environment. Pearson lists this part as 76–84 minutes with 9 question types.
This section may include tasks such as reading aloud, repeating sentences, describing images, retelling lectures, answering short questions, summarizing written text, and essay writing.
Students need to focus on clear pronunciation, natural fluency, correct grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, and time management.
PART 2
Reading
The Reading part checks how well you understand written English. It requires vocabulary knowledge, grammar awareness, reading speed, and the ability to understand how ideas connect.
This section may include tasks such as fill in the blanks, multiple choice questions, and re-order paragraphs. Students need to read carefully but also manage time because spending too long on one question can affect the rest of the section.
PART 3
Listening
The Listening part checks your ability to understand spoken English and answer accurately. Pearson lists the Listening part as 31–39 minutes with 8 question types, based on audio or video clips that play automatically.
This section may include tasks such as Summarize Spoken Text, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words, and Write From Dictation.
Students need strong focus, spelling accuracy, note-taking skills, and the ability to understand key information quickly.
QUESTION TYPES
What Students Need to Practice
The PTE test format includes different question types, so students should not prepare only with general English practice. Each task has its own method, timing, and scoring importance.
At British Center, students learn how to approach each question type correctly. Trainers explain what the task requires, how to avoid common mistakes, and how to improve accuracy with regular practice.
Answer Clearly Within the Given Time
Time management is important in the PTE Academic exam. Students need to understand how much time to spend on each task and how to continue confidently even if one question feels difficult.
Our trainers help students practice under exam-style timing so they can build speed, reduce hesitation, and stay calm during the real test.
COMPUTER-BASED TEST
Practice with the Right Exam Style
PTE Academic is fully computer-based, so students should be comfortable using a headset, microphone, keyboard, and screen before the exam. This is especially important for speaking, writing, and listening tasks.
British Center helps students become familiar with the test style through practical training, mock practice, and section-wise preparation.
